FRIDAY PUZZLE — When we last saw Daniel Nierenberg, he was making his New York Times Crossword debut by opening with the entry EROTIC NOVEL, which we can all agree was a promising start.
This time, he’s getting us a bit sozzled with a BAHAMA MAMA and a rousing game of BEER PONG, but at least we get a trip to Hawaii out of it (ALOHA TOWER).
In all seriousness, I did enjoy Mr. Nierenberg’s triple stacks in the northwest and southeast: They’re lively and there is no junk in the crossings. That’s tough to do.
One thing that stood out to me was the stark difference in difficulty between Sam Trabucco’s relatively easy Thursday puzzle and this Friday one. My solve was fairly successful on the left side of the puzzle, but I was flummoxed by the right side. I had ___STAR at 11D, but kept thinking about Temple as the university, not the CHILD STAR Shirley. I had PA___ for 38A, but was certain that medical residents no longer carried PAGERS, what with the advent of smartphones and texting, so I discounted it as an answer. One quick question to a physician friend later, and I learned that some residents do still carry pagers.
Mr. Nierenberg debuts six entries, which is not “whopping” by my count, but is still respectable (more than 10 debuts in one puzzle would enter the realm of “whopping”). He also resurrects three entries: IDLE THREAT, DEFLEA (one of the few gluey entries, with FOR ALL) and FOREARM.
Are you interested in becoming a crossword constructor? Mr. Nierenberg has some tips for you.
Happy Friday everyone!
The seeds for this puzzle were BAHAMA MAMA, PROM DRESS, RED DRAGON, and ADDED SUGAR. My original submission had DEFLEA at the bottom left corner, but I wasn’t entirely sure Will would approve. As a backup, I included an alternative bottom left corner featuring RIFLES instead of DEFLEA, which you see today. Even though I’m a huge horror fan, RED DRAGON was my second favorite entry; my first was NEAR MISSES. I’ve gotten a few rejections in the past from Will telling me my puzzle was a “near miss,” so once I saw it pop up in Crossfire by pure chance I knew I had to keep it. I figured it would give submitters a good laugh to see a “near miss” be approved.
On that note, to anyone still trying to get their foot in the door, here are some tips for improving your odds for an acceptance (especially themeless puzzles); an enormous thanks to Will and the team.
1) Get rid of any crosswordese (delete these from your word lists and default puzzle program word lists).
2) Make sure the black square pattern doesn’t cut off the flow and connections of the answer spaces too much (for example, don’t have only one answer square connect two major puzzle areas).
The hardest thing for a themeless, in my opinion, is featuring enough interesting long fill. Every editor has a different taste. As a scientist, I love “lactic acid” or “marine biome” as answers, but they were rejected in past submissions and specifically pointed out. Additionally, long fill stacks or an area of words will just sound and look right to you. Trust your gut.
Almost finished solving but need a bit more help? We’ve got you covered.
Warning: There be spoilers ahead, but subscribers can take a peek at the answer key.
